Norway and India have announced a strengthening of bilateral cooperation following the meeting between Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Oslo on 19 May 2026. The visit marked the first visit to Norway by an Indian Prime Minister since 1983 and included the establishment of a Norway–India Green Strategic Partnership.
According to the Government of Norway, the discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas including trade, the green transition, technology and international security. The announcement also highlights the importance of the EFTA–India Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which entered into force on 1 October 2025, and notes that approximately 160 Norwegian companies are currently operating in India.
The Green Strategic Partnership is expected to support closer cooperation on sustainable development, renewable energy, low-carbon technologies, energy efficiency and energy storage. The Government of Norway also notes that a number of cooperation agreements are being signed between Norwegian and Indian institutions and businesses in areas such as offshore wind, scientific research, technology and innovation for the green transition, and sustainable ocean management.
The visit also included important cooperation outcomes in health technology, digital development, oceans, space and research cooperation. These include an MoU on health cooperation covering digital health, artificial intelligence, research and health technology; a partnership on digital development; continued cooperation on sustainable ocean management; and a cooperation agreement between the Norwegian Space Agency and the Indian Space Research Organisation.
For the Nordic Centre in India, this renewed momentum in Norway–India relations is highly encouraging. It reflects the growing scope for meaningful collaboration between Nordic and Indian institutions across research, innovation, sustainability, technology, health, ocean studies and education.
NCI was also pleased to see Tereza Østbø Kuldova, Research Director at the Work Research Institute, Oslo Metropolitan University, and part of the NCI Secretariat at OsloMet, participate in the Norway–India Business and Research Summit connected to the visit.
As Norway and India deepen their cooperation, NCI looks forward to supporting Nordic higher education and research institutions in identifying opportunities, building partnerships and strengthening long-term academic engagement with India.
