NCI Short-Term Academic Programmes in India: January 2027

The Nordic Centre in India is pleased to announce three short-term academic programmes at the University of Hyderabad, running from 4 to 29 January 2027.

Designed for students from NCI member universities, these four-week intensive courses offer an opportunity to study India through interdisciplinary academic engagement, field-based learning, classroom discussion and cultural immersion. Hosted by the University of Hyderabad, the programmes introduce students to contemporary Indian society, environmental histories and ecological challenges, and questions of gender, diversity and social change.

Students may choose from the following courses:

A) Gender and Society in Contemporary India

This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to gender and sexuality in India from feminist and intersectional perspectives. Students examine gender in relation to caste, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation and social diversity, using India’s social and cultural complexity as a lens for critical study.

The course includes readings, films, lectures and field visits, including visits to organisations working on women and child labour, self-help groups, community media and activist initiatives. Teaching draws on faculty from sociology, political science, women’s studies, regional studies and communication.

B) Indian Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife: Reflecting on the Past and Looking Ahead

This course introduces students to India’s environmental history, wildlife conservation and ecological challenges. It examines how ecology and wildlife intersect with governance, colonialism and societal perceptions, while also engaging with contemporary urban ecological issues.

Students explore themes including ancient and medieval human–animal relations, colonial forest policies, indigenous ecological knowledge, urbanisation, industrialisation, pollution and conservation. Fieldwork forms a significant part of the course, helping students connect environmental history with present-day ecological realities.

Students engage with themes including caste, religion, socio-cultural stratification, political thought, popular culture, media, development, literature, art, foreign policy, gender debates and environmental policies. The programme combines lectures, interactive sessions, field trips, audio-visual presentations, films, documentaries and sightseeing tours.
