MOOCs are a recent and widely researched development in distance education which was first introduced in 2006 and emerged as a popular mode of learning in 2012.

Open Universities are part of their adult education system, wherein all adults have an equal opportunity to participate in education that follows the universities' curricula, irrespective of one’s age or educational background.
