India and Iceland Discuss Deeper Cooperation at the 3rd India–Nordic Summit
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Ms. Kristrún Frostadóttir, Prime Minister of Iceland, in Oslo on the margins of the 3rd India–Nordic Summit on 19 May 2026. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Prime Minister Frostadóttir assumed office.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Government of India, the two leaders discussed ways to deepen India–Iceland relations, particularly in the context of the India–European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) coming into effect. Both leaders noted that TEPA offers an important opportunity to unlock greater potential in trade, investment and manufacturing collaboration.
The meeting also reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across geothermal energy, fisheries, innovative technologies, creative economy, culture, tourism, mobility and people-to-people contacts. The leaders also discussed enhancing cooperation in Arctic research. Public communications around the meeting also highlighted areas such as clean energy, sustainability, carbon capture and storage, and the blue economy.
For the Nordic Centre in India, these areas are especially relevant to the wider Nordic–India higher education and research landscape. Iceland has distinctive strengths in areas such as geothermal energy, marine and fisheries research, Arctic studies, sustainability, clean energy, creative industries and innovation. These themes offer meaningful possibilities for academic collaboration, research partnerships, student mobility and institutional exchange with India.
As India and Iceland continue to deepen their engagement, NCI welcomes the opportunities this creates for stronger education and research linkages between Icelandic and Indian institutions, and more broadly across the Nordic–India knowledge ecosystem.
