Doctoral student in Mathematics, specialisation in Applied Mathematics, Karlstad University
The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology is accepting applications for a doctoral studentship leading to a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The purpose of this project is to develop microscopic models describing the interaction between mixtures of populations of particles, study the mathematical quality of the proposed models, perform rigorously homogenization asymptotics (and other averaging techniques), solve numerically the obtained macroscopic equations, and quantify the range of validity of the results. Efficient algorithms and multiscale numerical methods will be proposed so that modern simulation software can quickly give insight in the quality of the proposed multiscale models and in their potential applicability to exploring real-world scenarios.
A doctoral student is expected to engage in doctoral studies, which includes participation in research projects and postgraduate courses. The doctoral program comprises 240 higher education credits, including the doctoral thesis and 120 higher education credits for a Degree of Licentiate.
The doctoral student will perform research in mathematical homogenization (including partial differential equations and applied functional analysis) as well as in related approximation theory and numerical simulation of selected multiscale models, which target the harvesting of energy.
