ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR OF VETERINARY CLINICAL DIAGNOSTICS

Veterinary clinical diagnostics includes particularly diagnostic imaging but also laboratory diagnostics and diagnostic tests in domestic animals.
The applicant may be appointed as an Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) or as a full Professor, depending on their qualifications and career stage. All stages of the tenure track can be entered directly depending on the applicant’s career stage. The aim of the tenure track system is to grant tenure and a permanent position as a Professor.
The position will be at the Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine in Viikki campus in Helsinki. The appointee will be responsible for leading and developing the area of veterinary diagnostics, particularly diagnostic imaging, in teaching, research, clinical services and continuing education. The main focus can be either in small animal or equine clinical diagnostics, however, teaching may also include relevant aspects in production animal medicine.
The appointee will be expected to have a wide experience in veterinary clinical diagnostics. The appointee will have the chance to work alongside other veterinary specialists and is expected to contribute to the further development of veterinary clinical diagnostics, including diagnostic imaging. Leadership and administrative responsibilities in Veterinary Teaching Hospital may also be included.
The diagnostic imaging unit serves the Small Animal and Equine Hospitals and offers consultation services to the Production Animal Hospital. The current staff includes 6 small animal veterinarians (national specialists in small animal diseases and/or PhD), one national specialist in equine diseases and 5 experienced radiographers with university of applied sciences education. The state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment includes digital radiology, ultrasonography, CT, 1.5T MRI for small animals and low-field MRI for equine distal limbs. The unit belongs to the Helsinki in vivo Animal Imaging Platform (HAIP; https://www.helsinki.fi/en/infrastructures/helsinki-vivo-animal-imaging) as Diagnostic Imaging Service for Animals (DISA; https://www.helsinki.fi/en/infrastructures/helsinki-in-vivo-animal-imaging/infrastructures/diagnostic-imaging-service-for-animals).
Expectations and qualifications assessment
Because of the teaching duties and clinical work, the appointee is required to have a DVM or equivalent degree and preferably to be authorized as a veterinarian in EU or EEA. The applicant is also required to hold a PhD degree in the field of veterinary clinical diagnostics or another suitable field. The degree requirements must be met by the end of the application deadline. A professional specialist degree in veterinary diagnostic imaging (Diplomate of ECVDI or ACVR) or EBVS diplomate in another closely related clinical field will be considered a merit. To successfully carry out the duties of the position, the appointee is expected to have research and teaching experience, including experience in supervision of theses or dissertations. Good co-operative and interaction skills are essential.
An appointee to the position of an Assistant/Associate Professor in the tenure track shall hold a PhD degree in the field of veterinary clinical diagnostics or another suitable field, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research, have the teaching skills necessary for the position, and have the ability and motivation for an academic career.
An appointee to a full Professorship shall hold a PhD degree in the field of veterinary clinical diagnostics or another suitable field and have top-level scholarly qualifications, including the ability to obtain competitive research funding and lead a research group, experience in supervision of PhD students, and the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international collaboration in the field of research that they represent. The Professor shall also have the skills necessary to be an academic leader.
To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must be fluent in English. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, they are expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.
When considering the applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to research qualifications, teaching and supervision qualifications, public engagement and interaction within the university/scientific community, and experience in veterinary diagnostic imaging. The assessment is always conducted as an overall assessment.
