A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive user forums to support community interactions among students, professors, and teaching assistants. MOOCs are a recent and widely researched development in distance education which was first introduced in 2006 and emerged as a popular mode of learning in 2012.

Most universities in the Nordic region organize Open University courses. Open Universities are part of their adult education system, wherein all adults have an equal opportunity to participate in education that follows the universities' curricula, irrespective of one’s age or educational background. A consolidated list of country-wise MOOC’s and other courses provided through open universities in the Nordic region is given below:

Finland

University of Tampere

Through open higher education at Tampere University, one can study courses and study modules included in the degree studies of Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. University of Helsinki

Open university studies are courses from the University of Helsinki’s degree programmes which are available for all. Many of the courses are offered online. Courses begin throughout the year. A wide-range of MOOC’s are also offered by the University of Helsinki which can be found here.

University of Jyväskylä

The Open University of the University of Jyväskylä (JYUOpen) is the largest and most versatile open university in Finland, with over 16,000 students annually. An integral part of the University of Jyväskylä, JYUOpen promotes educational equality and lifelong learning with high pedagogical quality, both in Finland and internationally through flexible modes of study. University of Eastern Finland
