International seminar: Modernity, women and gender in a rising India

Welcome to a seminar on modern India and the challenges facing the country as it rises in global importance. India a federation of 29 states and 7 union territories is a diverse country with more than one billion population, 22 official languages, and numerous dialects. Sometime referred to as the world’s largest democracy, the principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution. However, in most Western countries we remain less well informed of the ramifications of implementing gender policies and the effect they have on the lived experiences of Indian women and girls. The aim of this one-day seminar is to introduce India and Indian women and gender research to a wider Swedish audience. To assist us in our efforts we have assembled prominent Indian researchers to guide us through a labyrinth of contemporary and often contentious issues with relevance for gender research as India negotiates its rise as a modern nation.
